Hello Word Press

It’s taken me a few days to make decisions and set it up, but I think I’m finally happy with the new home for my blog.

If any one has any suggestions for improvement, don’t be shy, please come on in and comment.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day

My favorite St. Patrick’s Day video, featuring U2 circa the early 80s

Umbrellas

I drove through the city yesterday, the gale force winds that came with the unending rain turned Manhattan into a graveyard of dead umbrellas. They were all over the road, a bit like roadkill.

It made me think of a picture I took of an installation at the Venice Art Biennale in 1995:

I’ve discovered a new fun social site: GetGlue

Essentially, it is a site to discover books, music, movies, tv, and topics you may enjoy based on what you’ve ranked as what you like or dislike.

I had a lot of fun filling out my profile over the past few days and then I wrote a few reviews on my favorites.

There was one hiccups where I inadvertently posted to both Facebook and Twitter but aside from that I’ve been enjoying the site. Two really cool things I’ve found:

1) If you can become the Guru of something (and who doesn’t want to be a Guru of something) you can be eligible to win a free thing related to it. So, for example, if you were the Guru of a book on punk chicks, you could win a Hole CD.

2) The add on Firefox toolbar, it recognizes books, movies, etc on other sites like Amazon or Netflix and it suggests other recommendations based on what you’re currently viewing and which of your friends liked what you’re looking at.

It would be more fun if more of my friends were playing, so check it out, my profile name is iBabette.

So, now that the Winter Olympics are over I really need to make an effort to catch up with all of the stuff piled up on my DVR. I’m weeks behind in every show I watch, I’m especially looking forward to catching up with Big Love. This season has been really dark, and Bill has turned into a complete arse but I’m still loving the show.

Snowy Day

Today’s snow was a great excuse for sleeping in.

I had been planning on the 7am kickboxing class today. The alarm dutifully went off and I could hear the rain beating against the window. After an alarmingly short debate with myself, I shut off the alarm, rolled over and slept in with this vague notion I’d go to the 9am class.

I don’t like the 9am class because by the time I’m having my first cup of coffee its already 1030 and that seems wrong during the week. I don’t accomplish much work at home before that first cup. Todays rain and snow made it seem okay.

At 8am I woke up again. It is so much more civilized to wake up at 8am. I had just thirty five minutes to kill before getting ready for class. I got up, brushed my teeth, washed my face, looked at the snow falling and climbed back under the covers to read. The next time I glanced at the clock it was precisely 9am.

Hurrumph. So much for Kickboxing Class at 9am.

I think that pretty much set the tone for the day. Plan to do something, get distracted, do something else. Not a bad way to spend a snowy day I suppose.

oops

I’ve been remiss in blogging recently. And I wish I had a fascinating topic on my mind at the moment, alas I do not.

I’ve been really enjoying my classes at NYU. It’s interesting to see where the holes in my self education are located. And its interesting to see different people’s interactions and learning curves within digital tools.

OUCH

Took a spill last night, I am not sure if I hit a patch of black ice or it was just a slick spot that the soles of my boots couldn’t handle. Either way I hit the ground hard.

My knees actually look (and feel) worse than the tear in my favorite jeans but I’m more upset about the jeans. It is so hard to find a pair that fit right….sigh.

Runs, Meetups, Webinars

A bit of a late start to my day, I didn’t set the alarm and slept in until 7:30. Then while still warm and cozy I heard Satirius Johnson say it was 37 degrees, I’m not sure why, but I decided that meant it warm.

I recall fondly a time where as long as the cute thermometer that hung just outside the back porch read above 30 I ran outside. I also recall less fondly that I regularly and conveniently forget that this number did not take into account the inevitable wind chill off of the Atlantic. I’d notice the wind chill immediately as I set out to run my 4 miles on the boardwalk. This morning’s run, with the wind off the Hudson brought these memories to mind. Cold as I was, I’m thrilled to have been liberated from the treadmill.

And I discovered apparently there is battery in the apple/nike chip thingy (lets call it iRun) because when i popped it in this morning my screen told me the battery was low, and then it died before my run ended.

It’s been a busy week, Thursday I went to two publishing meet ups. The first was “How to Market Yourself and Books While You’re at it” As always, it was interesting but I didn’t walk away with as much information or food for thought as I have from other meetings. The second was Digital Book World’s 7x20x21 Pecha Pecka. That was terrific, the presentations were interesting and it was very nice to be around such optimistic peeps in publishing.

Yesterday was webinar day. The first was the Digital Book World Roundtable which was really interesting and for me really exciting as they were talking about where the new positions need to grow in publishing and what got me so excited was that they are all in areas that I’m interested in.

The second webinar was more of a direct eLearning class on Data Asset Management. It was a bit long at an hour and a half. I think I learned a few things but mostly I knew the core of the information presented.
