Three Little Birds

With apologies to Bob Marley, these little guys seem to have made my window sill home.

They are kinda cute, except when they poke at the screen trying to find a way in, and I’m not a fan of the feathers and such they leave out there in their wake.

almost done

I’m almost done with the major part of the photography website overhaul – one more gallery to get up and then just a few fixes for things that aren’t laying out quite right.

I have to say, I love the moment when I think I figured something out, and then prove it by hitting refresh and seeing the page look as I’ve imagined it would look.

On the other hand when I don’t have it figured out yet and hitting refresh caused the browser to respond with “resource error” or “blah blah mysql error” or just do something unexpected, those moments I can do without.

I’m hoping to finish it up tomorrow evening!

Asking for Help

Happy New Year.

I was a bit at a loss over what to blog about this weekend. I really didn’t want to go down either the top ten or the resolution road, but really that’s an excuse.

I’ve been wholly obsessed with a complete overhaul of my photography website and had (for me) a thorny coding issue. I’m not done with the redo yet, hopefully mid week, but I think I’ve learned when to ask for help.

New Year’s Eve day I decided to fix a wobbly plug in the bathroom, and I guess I turned the screw too tight but what I know for sure is that I plunged the loo into darkness. And after a quick check of the fuse box I immediately called the electrician as opposed to continue tinkering with it myself.

So, why is it that I sat here for days, trying to sort out by myself why a piece of the new site wasn’t working…. eventually I did ping a friend for help (THANK YOU, OTTO!!) I got the clues I needed to make it work. Okay, by clues I mean spoon-fed bits of code I should have been able to easily modify.

I’m wondering within my job search if I am more like I am with the electrician or more like I am with coding. It’s probably somewhere in between.

Well, I gotta go follow up with the electrician – I’m tired of mood lighting in the bathroom. (Although, i must say it was a stroke of brilliance when I hung my water resistant led headlamp from the shower rod.)

sleepy

I’ve been sleeping late all week – as if I could catch up on a year’s worth of sleep in the days leading up to the end of the year.

Maybe its the cold, or the new flannel PJs, but this morning I couldn’t drag myself out of bed. And my bed isn’t even comfortable – I really need a new bed. The bed is a bit like a donut these days, no matter what side the mattress is on, it caves into a small hole in the middle.

On the other hand, I was up and out of bed by 9am, so, maybe the early morning gym classes have just warped my idea of morning indulgences.

To Do Lists

I’ve been on a roll lately, “making a list, checking it twice” and most importantly crossing things off as done.

There are a lot of great apps/programs out there for to-do lists, however in lists I’m mostly a luddite. I really like my old-fashioned approach using a notebook and pen. And best of all, when the sheet is gloriously all crossed off, I rip it out and crumple it aggressively (think touch down antics in the end zone) and unceremoniously tossing it in the trash.

I do use the “to do” function in my calendar for things I want in on my radar but that’s different from things I’d like to do today or this week.

So, are you a pen/paper person and if not, what do you use?

Dude with a Surfboard

I saw a dude with a surfboard today walking, with purpose, down 6th avenue around 32nd street. I wonder if he was coming or going. The board looked well used, sun-bleached and the leash was neatly wrapped around the back fins. It was so wonderfully incongruent with its surroundings that I broke into a wide smile and have been in the best mood since I saw it.

I want to surf again. Feel that moment of pure magic when the wave lifts (and on rare occasions) I can smoothly pop up from an “upward facing dog” to a “squat” to standing and successfully execute a neat turn or two. And then, as the shore comes closer, while still in control, get back down and paddle back out to the line (and my instructor.) Doesn’t that equal me surfing! Right?

I’m very much a beginner surfer but love it. In the 14 months since I was last on a surfboard I’ve thought of it often, and lately a lot. It may have started when I bought the new Pearl Jam Album, Backspacer, (err, paid to download it from itunes.) From my first listen my favorite song has been Amongst The Waves (lyrics or live performance) and I’ve listened to it daily since then. I was thrilled when Eddie introduced it as a “love song for surfers” at the show in Philadelphia.

Sadly, the only thing I’m likely to surf today is the internet and the tv, but one day I will be get out there again.

Beginings

On a whim, I’m starting a blog. Does that mean I’ve entered the blogosphere? I’ve no particular focus for it at the moment but we’ll see what develops over time… ideas, words, images, yarn and yarns.
