Central Park Hoodie

I went into my local yarn store, Patricia’s Yarns, this afternoon to take advantage of the annual Superbowl sale. I love being in the yarn store there are so many colors, textures, patterns, ideas and great conversations.

I have learned to temper my over eager eyes and focus on (more or less) one project at a time. I know a lot of knitters who can happily go between several works in progress but for me having multiple items on needles tends to give me stress. I prefer to have one item in the works, two at most.

My new project is The Central Park Hoodie which I am making for myself. I’ve wanted to make this sweater for ages, long before I had the skill to create it. I doubt I’ll finish it in time to wear it this year but that’s okay.

We narrowed down my yarn choices to ones that would work well with the pattern and then to the ones that had enough skeins on hand today. I’m happy with my choice.

I’ve just watched the first few episodes of Nurse Jackie, which is amazing, and while watching I’ve already knit up the first inch of the sweater.

If you knit, you should be on ravelry, its crack for knitters. And if you are there this is me.

Mother Bear Project

I am at a standstill with my current knitting project as I wait on someome to provide measurements for me to complete it. Before I sat down to watch tv tonight I was a bit lost as to what else I could do simultaneously.

My “leftover yarn” jar is obviously overflowing and rather than come up with more places to stash “scrap” yarn I decided to dive in and create something from what I’ve got on hand. I always end up with some qty of excess yarn at the end of a project and the stash has moved from a small drawer, to a midsized bag, and lastly to the giant jar. I like the way the jar looks and it doubles as a great doorstop. But enough is enough, it is time to lighten the load inside the jar.

I had a flash of inspiration and I’ve decided to make a few bears for the Mother Bear Project. I first heard of the Mother Bear Project when my local yarn shop hosted an event night. The bear was quick and fun to knit up. I’m going to make my first one more or less according to the simple pattern and then play around with stripes and textures for subsequent bears.

Seascape Stole

On the one hand, I love knitting lacey patterns. On the other, It’s a bit of a pain in the arse. Especially one like this, where much of the chart is impossible to memorize. This means for practically every stitch I had to look back at the chart for guidance. Generally speaking, this limits the project to my couch. Although, this piece had its start under Barcelona skies before I saw it was just too complicated and thankfully it wasn’t the only knitting I brought with me. Yes, my over-packing extends past shoes and into knitting projects.

I’ve been knitting for a few years now and generally pretty confident that things I’ve created by hand will not suddenly unravel – except for lacey knits. There are so many reasons to be off count that it would be easy to miss a dropped stitch. There are plenty of mistakes in this piece, but I really don’t think anyone but me will focus on them. Do you?
