Snapshot From The Backlist

NZ Penguin

There’s a working sheep farm on the Otago Peninsula in New Zealand that is also the natural home to a colony of Yellow Eyed Penguins.  Apparently, the farmer watched the little guys come up out of the sea every night and decided to set up a sanctuary for them.  In order to fund the project he constructed hidden blinds above the beach so that guided tourists can visit without disturbing the Penguins.  It was awesome.

I did the last tour of the evening, before heading back to Dunedin the tour guide/van driver had to go around and lock the gates so that the sheep wouldn’t wander off, she left us in the van with a tape of “traditional kiwi music.”  The tape consisted of 1 Maori song, Crowded House and all other incantation of the Finn Brothers.

My thoughts go out to the folks in Christchurch, NZ.
